Planning a vacation can be so exciting, that one can almost get caught up in the vacation, months before it happens! Believe me, I’ve been there.

To take away some of that stress and worry, I wanted to write a how to list for you to save money while planning the vacation of a lifetime! I know you want to get the most out of your vacation for your buck, so planning is essential and I have a few ideas on how you can start reducing that stress instantly!

How to save money while planning your vacation:

Plan the dates of your trip.

This can be especially cost saving if you travel by air. Weekends and holidays, are almost always the most expensive times to fly. If you can plan your trip before the holiday or weekend starts, you could save a nice amount of money on your airfare.

Pack light.

Airlines are charging for bags these days, and if you're traveling by car the more weight you have in your trunk, the more gas you use. So pack light, and plan on staying in a hotel or rental, that offers a coin operated laundry. You can mix and match your outfits so that you have clothes for casual days, and possibly dressy days. And if you feel the need to buy anything on vacation, you can send it home via shipping. This will still end up being cheaper, then paying for extra baggage.

If you're traveling by air, research the smaller airlines.

Some smaller airlines like Air Tran, and Jet Blue, may be cheaper than the big guys, and boarding may not be quite as busy. Also try to buy your ticket four weeks in advance. You could save a couple hundred dollars, by booking early. When flying try to take some snacks with you that Homeland Security won't confiscate. Some airlines barely give out peanuts or pretzels anymore, so pack a lunch to help save some money while traveling.

If you're traveling by car, research the weekend and weekly deals.

Sometimes you can save anywhere from $5.00 - $10.00 a day, by taking advantage of specials. Also compare vehicles to see which one is going to give you better gas mileage. It might be worth the sacrifice of a little room, to save $10.00 a tank.

Find a hotel close to all of the attractions.

When booking hotels, try to find hotels that are as close to the attractions you want to see, as possible. Another great way to save, is to get a hotel with a stove and refrigerator. This can save a bundle, so you don't have to eat out for every meal. Also some hotel booking sites like hotels.com, and others, will help you save by paying in advance. This can be great if you're sure about where you want to stay. If you're not so sure, don't make the commitment, you will lose some money for canceling.

Book a vacation rental or AirBnB.

Vacation rentals are more popular in destinations that have a lot of tourists. Some places like Florida, Hawaii, California, and others, will rent out their condominium or home, for almost the same price as a hotel. This can be great when traveling with a family. You don't have to worry about parking, loud music in the room next to you, or people coming into your room for cleaning. Some homes may even have swimming pools in them, so you can swim privately. Vacation rentals can be a great alternative to hotels, as well as getting more for your buck.

Buy attraction tickets ahead of time.

If you know what you want to see or do, you can sometimes find discounts on-line, that can save you anywhere from 10-50%. Some tourist areas even have a City Pass, or an attraction pass, where you can visit some of the most popular destinations for one low price.
